Established in 1982, Government Code Section 65570 mandates FMMP to biennially report on the conversion of farmland and grazing land, and to provide maps and data to local government and the public.
<purpose>The Farmland Mapping and Monitoring Program (FMMP) provides data to decision makers for use in planning for the present and future use of California's agricultural land resources. The data is a current inventory of agricultural resources. This data is for general planning purposes and has a minimum mapping unit of ten acres.</purpose>

<logic>The Important Farmland survey area is based on National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) modern soil surveys covering most non-governmental lands in California; 49 counties are fully or partially surveyed at this time. Soil surveys specific to National Forests or other government land units are not surveyed. Beginning in 2002, SSURGO digital soil information was incorporated into the Merced County Important Farmland data. Data subsequent to 2002 may have acreage and soil line differences due to incorporation of newer NRCS-SSURGO editions.
Prior to the availability of SSURGO, soil information was hand-transferred from the paper soil surveys. Older versions of the data have not been modified. The land use minimum mapping unit of ten acres has not changed, but digital soil units of down to one acre occur in the SSURGO-enhanced Important Farmland data. Due to the interaction of land use and soil components of the data, incorporation of SSURGO may also result in units of less than ten acres for categories such as Other Land (or Nonagricultural and Natural Vegetation). For more information on SSURGO, contact the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service: http://soildatamart.nrcs.usda.gov/</logic>

<attrdomv>
<edom>
<edomv>Prime Farmland (P)</edomv>
<edomvd>Irrigated land with the best combination of physical and chemical features able to sustain long term production of agricultural crops. This land has the soil quality, growing season, and moisture supply needed to produce sustained high yields. Land must have been used for production of irrigated crops at some time during the four years prior to the mapping date.</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>Farmland of Statewide Importance (S)</edomv>
<edomvd>Irrigated land similar to Prime Farmland that has a good combination of physical and chemical characteristics for the production of agricultural crops. This land has minor shortcomings, such as greater slopes or less ability to store soil moisture than Prime Farmland. Land must have been used for production of irrigated crops at some time during the four years prior to the mapping date.</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>Unique Farmland (U)</edomv>
<edomvd>Lesser quality soils used for the production of the state's leading agricultural crops. This land is usually irrigated, but may include non-irrigated orchards or vineyards as found in some climatic zones in California. Land must have been cropped at some time during the four years prior to the mapping date.</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>Farmland of Local Importance (L)</edomv>
<edomvd>Farmlands that have physical characteristics that would qualify for Prime or Statewide except for the lack of irrigation water. Also, farmlands that produce crops that are not listed under Unique but are important to the economy of the county or city.</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>Grazing Land (G)</edomv>
<edomvd>Land on which the existing vegetation is suited to the grazing of livestock. This category is used only in California and was developed in cooperation with the California Cattlemen's Association, University of California Cooperative Extension, and other groups interested in the extent of grazing activities.</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>Urban and Built-Up Land (D)</edomv>
<edomvd>Urban and Built-Up land is occupied by structures with a building density of at least 1 unit to 1.5 acres, or approximately 6 structures to a 10-acre parcel. Common examples include residential, industrial, commercial, institutional facilities, cemeteries, airports, golf courses, sanitary landfills, sewage treatment, and water control structures.</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>Other Land (X)</edomv>
<edomvd>Land which does not meet the criteria of any other category. Typical uses include low density rural development, heavily forested land, mined land, or government land with restrictions on use. This category was subdivided into R, V, Cl, and nv beginning with the 2004 data. Subsequently, R was subdivided into sAC and R beginning with the 2006 data.</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>Water (W)</edomv>
<edomvd>Water areas with an extent of at least 40 acres.</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>Rural Residential Land (R)</edomv>
<edomvd>This includes residential areas of one to five structures per ten acres.</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>Vacant or Disturbed Land (V)</edomv>
<edomvd>This consists of open field areas that do not qualify for an agricultural category, mineral and oil extraction areas, and rural freeway interchanges.</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>Confined Animal Agriculture (Cl)</edomv>
<edomvd>This includes aquaculture, dairies, feedlots, and poultry facilities.</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>Nonagricultural and Natural Vegetation (nv)</edomv>
<edomvd>This covers heavily wooded, rocky or barren areas, riparian and wetland areas, grassland areas which do not qualify for Grazing Land due to their size or land management restrictions, and small water bodies. Constructed wetlands are also included in this category.</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>Semi-Agricultural and Rural Commercial Land (sAC)</edomv>
<edomvd>This includes farmsteads, agricultural storage and packing sheds, unpaved parking areas, composting facilities, equine facilities, firewood lots, and campgrounds.</edomvd>
